With his small portable workbench, sculptor François Pompon (1855–1933) loved to wander through the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, a public park and botanical garden. Here, he observed animals and created small-scale models. Back in his studio, he sculpted bears, panthers, dogs, chickens, and rabbits, finding the essence of each animal by simplifying their shapes. The animal sculptures, many of which are housed at the Orsay Museum, come alive before the eyes of visitors. In homage to Pompon’s work, artist Gérard Lo Monaco, in collaboration with RMN (a group of 34 museums) and Orsay Museum, reimagined these sculptures to create this stunning line of wooden toys.
