It first flew on September 18, 1928, and in 1929 made a promotional two-week journey around the world as the first air transport with paying passengers. The airship began regular passenger service to South America and completed a successful polar expedition in 1931, mapping Russia's northern coast, and continued on regular flights from Germany to Brazil in the following years.
