Which products are suitable for a newborn's skin?

A newborn’s sensitive skin requires very specific and gentle care. Baby skincare may seem simple at first glance, but once you look more closely you’ll find there are so many options that choosing truly high-quality—and above all safe—products isn’t as easy as it might seem.

Newborn skincare: why is choosing the right products so important?

The first weeks of a newborn’s life are a time when their skin is extremely sensitive, delicate, and therefore very vulnerable. Baby skin is up to five times thinner than an adult’s, which means external factors affect it much more. Ingredients in cosmetic products are absorbed more quickly and can cause irritation or even allergic reactions in infants. For this reason, we should never underestimate the choice of cosmetics for newborns.

For a baby’s skin it’s very important to maintain natural balance and hydration and to protect it from external influences. If we reach for the wrong products or cosmetics with unsuitable additives, we can burden the baby’s skin and cause redness, eczema, or other skin problems. Suitable cosmetics help a baby’s skin form a natural protective barrier that prevents the penetration of harmful substances, viruses, and bacteria. Quality products also nourish the skin optimally, ensuring softness and a healthy appearance.

Which essential skincare products for newborns do you need?

The market offers an endless range of products for children, but the truth is that a baby doesn’t need many cosmetic products—just a few basics. Below we’ll go over the most important categories to focus on when shopping.

Cleansing gel and shampoo for babies

The most important thing is to choose an appropriate cleansing product for your baby. The ideal option is a product labeled "for newborns". It contains only mild, gentle substances and respects the natural pH of baby skin. Opt for products free of fragrance, alcohol, parabens, and sulfates (SLES, SLS). Cleansing emulsions without soap are also a good choice, as they don’t dry out the skin and gently care for it. Focus on formulas with natural ingredients such as calendula, aloe vera, oatmeal, or panthenol—all of which have excellent soothing properties. During bath time, use a small amount of product and apply gently with your hand.

Oils, body lotions, or creams for babies

Another essential category in baby care is hydrating products. After a bath, it’s important to moisturize your baby’s skin so it doesn’t dry out and stays soft and supple.

Choose simple products with a short ingredient list. Very popular are almond, olive, or jojoba oils—ideally organic. For sensitive skin, also choose hydrating lotions or nourishing body creams with natural ingredients such as shea butter (karité) and vitamin E; opt for natural, fragrance-free products without harsh chemicals. After bathing, apply gently, without pressure, in a thin layer.

Diaper rash cream

The diaper area can be very sensitive. The skin here is exposed to moisture, which can lead to irritation and diaper rash. As a preventive measure, it’s important to use a quality diaper cream that protects and soothes the skin. Choose one containing zinc, calendula, or panthenol; it effectively combats irritation, reduces redness, and helps prevent irritation.

Which ingredients should you avoid in newborn skincare?

When choosing cosmetics for newborns, read product labels carefully. Avoid substances such as parabens, phthalates, artificial colorants, synthetic fragrances, mineral oils (paraffins), or alcohol. All of these are potential allergens and can irritate a baby’s sensitive skin. Natural baby cosmetics are often the best choice, but always check the ingredient list of each product.

Give your baby the safe, gentle care they deserve!
