January activities: What to do with kids at home and outdoors

January is a great time to share moments with your kids, whether you’re out in the fresh air or enjoying the warmth of home. Here are a few ideas for meaningful and fun activities that will boost creativity, movement, and family togetherness.

1. Ice experiments

Making ice ornaments: If temperatures outside drop below freezing, try making ice ornaments for the garden or balcony.

You’ll need:

  • plastic bowls or molds
  • water
  • natural materials (leaves, berries, flowers)
  • string

Instructions:

Pour water into a bowl and add the natural decorations. Lay a piece of string on the surface so it stays fixed once frozen. Leave it to freeze outside, then hang the ornaments on a tree or fence.

2. A fairy-tale afternoon with your own scenery

Awaken the kids’ imagination and create your own little theater at home.

You’ll need:

  • cardboard boxes
  • scissors
  • crayons, markers, or paints
  • puppets (or make them from paper)

Instructions:

Turn a box into a stage. Come up with a story together and make the scenery. Each family member can play a different character. Fun guaranteed!

3. A homemade board game

Create your own board game that’s original and tailored to your family’s taste.

You’ll need:

  • a large sheet of paper
  • markers
  • game pieces (you can replace them with small toys or corks)
  • a die

Instructions:

Draw a game board and mark the spaces with various tasks or questions. Test the game and enjoy playing it.

TIP: If you don’t want to make a board game, you can buy one in our e-shop.

4. January photo booth

Plan a family photo competition.

Themes:

"Winter magic"

"Our pet in action"

"The funniest family snapshot"

All you need is a camera or a phone. Look through the photos together later and pick the best one.

TIP: If you like, you can have a photo printed and put it in a frame to decorate a shelf or hang it on the wall.
Alternatively, you can just play at taking pictures with one of the kids’ cameras.

5. Cooking together

Warm up by preparing a winter specialty together. Kids can help with simple tasks like mixing batter or decorating cookies.

TIP: Try simple "January" cookies with nuts and honey. You can also play at being a chef with kids’ play kitchens and chef accessories.

January doesn’t have to be a time of winter hibernation. With a little creativity and enthusiasm, you can create unforgettable shared moments the whole family will enjoy.
