Back to School: Essentials Checklist for Younger and Older Students

The new school year is approaching, and with it the need to get children everything they need for a successful start. Whether you have a first-grader or a seasoned student at home, the following practical, easy-to-follow checklist will help ensure nothing is missing from the backpack on the first day of school.

School supplies checklist – what not to forget?

Every student should make a list before the school year begins of items that make learning easier and school days more pleasant. So what shouldn’t be missing from any student’s backpack?

  • School backpack or satchel: It should be ergonomic, with ample space and pockets for all school supplies.
  • Pencil case: Equipped with a pen, pencils, colored pencils, markers, an eraser, and a sharpener.
  • Bag for indoor shoes: With appropriate footwear.
  • Notebooks: Lined, squared, and plain, depending on subject requirements.
  • Folders for notebooks and textbooks: To protect them from damage.
  • Lunch box and water bottle: To support healthy eating and hydration.
  • Art supplies: Scissors, glue, watercolors, tempera paints, brushes, modeling clay, etc.
  • Gym bag: With clothing and shoes for both outdoor and gym use.
  • Wallet and lanyard: To keep coins and keys organized.

Basic gear

Every student needs a quality school backpack or satchel that’s comfortable and functional. Bags with an ergonomic design and reflective elements for safety are ideal. A well-organized pencil case is also essential so it can hold all the necessary tools.

Lunch box and water bottle

Don’t forget a lunch box and water bottle, which are key to healthy eating and hydration throughout the school day. Make sure they’re practical and fit easily into the backpack or satchel along with other school supplies.

Writing supplies and notebooks

Writing supplies include pens, pencils of various grades, colored pencils, markers, an eraser, and a sharpener. Notebooks and textbooks should be protected with covers to prevent damage. For younger students, it’s also important to have letter and number folders.

Art supplies

For art classes, prepare a box or hanging organizer for art supplies, an apron, a plastic sheet for the desk, a water cup, a sponge, a palette, brushes in various sizes, tempera paints, watercolors, wax crayons, pastels, modeling clay, glue, scissors, a sharpener, and ink.

Sports gear

For PE, it’s important to have comfortable, breathable clothing and footwear. Indoor court shoes without black soles are ideal. It’s also recommended to bring spare underwear, socks, and a towel.

Desk and chair

It’s important to create a quiet, comfortable space for your child to prepare for lessons. Get a desk and chair with adjustable height and ergonomic design. The desk should be well lit, ideally placed under a window.

Tips for parents

  • Create the list together with your child so they feel involved in the preparations.
  • Watch for promotions and discounts on school supplies to save money.
  • Tailor the selection to your school’s and teachers’ requirements.
  • Stay in touch with the school about any specific equipment requirements.

With this checklist, your child will be perfectly prepared for the new school year. Wishing you happy and successful school days!
